Shelf-Possessed

James Campbell, in last Sunday's New York Times, reviews Books: A Memoir, by Larry McMurtry. Mr. McMurtry is best known as an author, but next best as operator of the Booked Up used book stores in Archer City, Texas.
McMurtry, who has turned Archer City, Tex., where he grew up, into a “book town” and helped give it a public library, is a genuine bookman — a reader as much as a collector...

The used book dealers I talk with often got into the business because they enjoyed reading and thought they could be bookmen. Then they find the business leaves them no time for reading.
