The issues of family and sexuality proved the key to unlocking evangelical potential to become overtly political, but remarkably (in the light of past antagonisms) several of those who had the most to do with turning that key were Roman Catholics. For conservative Catholics, of course, issues regarding sexuality had long been seen as preeminently political. ...Remarkably, it was not until the end of the 1970s that abortion emerged as a leading evangelical concern. Prior to the 1970s strict opposition to abortion had been viewed primarily as a Roman Catholic position.
