Did America Have a Founding?

Essay by Jeff Polet, professor of political science at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, at Modern Age.

"Clearly, America was not 'founded' in the ancient sense. Still, Madison believed the defects of the regime under the Articles of Confederation were sufficiently grievous to justify a recasting of the system, and those who opposed the Constitution as the solution to the problem had to come up with something better."

See American State Papers, and see The Federalist by Publius (Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, John Jay), in Great Books of the Western World (first edition, 52 Vol., 1952) volume 43, (second edition, 60 Vol., 1990) volume 40.
