Rising sensitivity and feminism during the last half century turned Shakespeare's classic comedy "The Taming of the Shrew" into something of a pariah. A macho man subjugating a feisty woman by physical and psychological means made many people uncomfortable, at best.It certainly ran flagrantly counter to our evolving sense of fairness, equality and respect in gender relations. Theater companies agonized over how to stage the play, and some decided to simply duck the issue and not perform it.
Theater-goers appear to be people who enjoy themes that they think make the right people uncomfortable, that is, other people.
