Mortimer Adler at 79: The Ideas Roll On

"At 79, he contends that he has become ''educated'' only within the last 15 or 20 years. ''But what I do want for children to learn in school is to think. ...

"His method is classically simple. After students had read the Declaration of Independence, for example, Dr. Adler said to the Oakland students: 'This document was written in 1776. The war it accompanied started in 1775. That war has been given the following names: The Revolutionary War, The War of Rebellion, The War of Independence and The War of Secession. From reading the following paragraph, what do you think is the best name?'"
