Archdiocesan Synod to stress role of the laity

Mary Beth Murphy reported on the Archdiocesan Synod in the Milwaukee Sentinel for August 22, 1987.

It looked forward to the then-upcoming Archdiocesan Synod August 28-30, 1987. That 1987 synod included religious and laity, hence the theme "Walking Together". The Synod prior to that was for clergy only.

The article says that earlier synod was in 1891. The book Through the Years (1993), covering the history of the Milwaukee Catholic Herald through 1944, says (page 26) regarding events in July 1892,

"Nearly 200 priests attended the first regular Diocesan Synod July 12-14 at St. Francis Seminary 'to frame permanent laws adapted to our circumstances and the needs of the diocese of the present time -- laws by which the bishop, priests and laity are to be guided in the fulfillment of their respective duties and in their dealings with one another.'"
