I am a catechist who is involved in first Eucharist preparation. I am appalled that so few of the children know their basic prayers, yet they are going to receive the Body of Christ. Our faith formation director says there’s nothing we can do about it. What do you think?The question is headlined Why do so few children know their prayers? as opposed to Why do so many people on pastoral staffs say nothing can be done?

or: Why aren't Catholic parents teaching the prayers to their children...?
ReplyDeleteMy child was only taught the Our Father at CCD St. John Vianney in Brookfield. No Hail Mary. No Glory Be. They did, however teach her some watered down version of the act of contrition.
ReplyDeleteThe fault is with the parents who don't live the Catholic faith at home. Meanwhile, most Catholics under 50 don't know their faith at all so teaching their own children anything is out of the question. Even ones who appear to support the Church are shaky on the teachings, or don't care what they are supposed to believe either way. Everything is just opinion.
ReplyDeleteIf kids are not living it/studying it/having it enforced at home there really is not much the catechist can do....the pastoral staff should then prioritize reteaching the parents---if they even bother showing up for mass.
When you have a priest practically begging the parents to bring the kids to mass and he is ignored, well, then what do you expect?
