The American Church

This report on Christianity in America says the percentage of Catholics who attend Mass every Sunday declined as follows: 1990 32%; 2000 28%; 2003 25%. Extrapolating the latest trend gets us to 0% in 2028.

Metro Milwaukee is leading the way with a 1990-2000 31.3% decline in the percentage of the population attending a Catholic church on any given weekend. (Only metropolitan Flint, Michigan, had a bigger percentage decline.)

  1. Guess this means all us the faithful who actually show up have got to stop bellyachin' so much and do more evangelizing instead.....and getting lots of extra tabernacle time in, too!

  2. VERY interesting numbers.

When one understands "cult" and its relationship to "culture," however, the numbers are understandable.

Another way to put it: what's the percentage of Catholics/Prots/Other who see an NFL game on Sunday? Or who can be found in Target/WallyWorld/MarshallField's on Sunday?

    Hmmmmm.
