Cardinal Aims For New Unity For Catholics

Gustav Niebuhr reported in The New York Times, August 13, 1996.
The initiative, called the Catholic Common Ground Project, will be the work of a committee whose members include seven other bishops, among them Roger Cardinal Mahony, Archbishop of Los Angeles, and Archbishop Rembert G. Weakland of Milwaukee.

...

In announcing the initiative, Cardinal Bernardin, known for often being able to forge consensus among his fellow bishops, said he had been troubled that ''an increasing polarization within the church and, at times, a mean-spiritedness have hindered the kind of dialogue that helps us address our mission and concerns.''
